Emily Kane, 22
A rookie homicide detective in 1969 Los Angeles, Emily Kane is ambitious, perceptive, and determined to carve out space for herself in a profession that rarely makes room for women. After years spent rebuilding her life following James Bonkowski’s presumed death in Vietnam, Emily believes she has finally moved forward — until he returns as her case partner, forcing her to confront the past she thought she had buried for good.

James Bonkowski, 23
James Bonkowski is a homicide detective and Vietnam veteran whose return to Los Angeles forces him to face the life he left behind. Quiet, perceptive, and marked by war, James carries the weight of both survival and absence. Reunited with Emily Kane four years after being presumed dead, he finds himself navigating unresolved history while working beside the woman he never truly forgot.

Andrew Thomas, 27
Andrew Thomas is Emily Kane's steady and dependable fiancé. Thoughtful and ambitious in his own right, Andrew represents the future Emily has worked hard to build: stable, certain, and untouched by the ghosts of her past. But when James Bonkowski returns to Los Angeles, Andrew finds himself caught in the growing distance between the woman he plans to marry and the history she cannot seem to leave behind.

Maria Valdez, 22
Maria Valdez is a young woman whose presence in James Bonkowski’s life is difficult to define and impossible to ignore. Charismatic, persistent, and deeply unsettling in her timing, Maria appears in his orbit again and again, as if distance means nothing to her. What began as an inescapable presence becomes something far more complicated, tied to a history James has never spoken aloud and does not have the language to confront.

Margaret Bonkowski, 48
After rising to local prominence in the mid-1940s, Margaret Bonkowski performed in the same Los Angeles circuit that shaped her adult life and lead her to both her husband, Stefan, and her son, James. Though her home life became her entire world and her public performances have slowed, she continues to sing at the same club where her career began.

Stefan Bonkowski, 52
Stefan once worked in the homicide division, much like his son. Now on his way to retirement, he's settled for paperwork and easy days, prioritizing his wife, Margaret. Proud, disciplined, and shaped by a lifelong belief in duty, he remains devoted to his family, though unresolved grief surrounding James’ birth and future has created quiet fractures in his understanding of who his son is and who he wanted to become.

Rory Barnes, 28
An Administrative Vice detective and James' former Army friend, Rory Barnes occupies a morally gray space. He's happy in his life, but he's not quite like James. He wants the quiet and the simple where James seems drawn to the complications. Charismatic, difficult, and often abrasive, we hope to show off more of Rory in the future.

Betty Barnes, 22
Betty's simple life is all she ever wanted: a good husband, an infant, and a nice house with a picket fence in the front. Though she once harbored a quiet crush on James Bonkowski, her childhood best friend, she grew out of it after high school — and after the arrival of Emily into James' life. Her involvement in this story is surface-level, but we hope to share more of her in the future.

Jack Kane, 50
Jack Kane is the adoptive, single father of Emily Kane. Financially strained throughout much of her upbringing, Jack built the best home he could defined by stability, honesty, and unwavering support. He remains one of the most influential figures in Emily's life, offering both guidance and hard truths when necessary. Their relationship is deeply mutual, rooted in trust, challenge, and enduring affection.

Elaine Washington, 22
[Mention-only] Emily's childhood best friend and one of the most influential people in her life, Elaine Washington grew up just one floor away in the same apartment building. Elaine and Emily remained inseparable despite the social barriers placed between them, standing side by side through protests, personal hardships, and adulthood. Though a brief romantic chapter complicated their relationship years later, their friendship endured long after it ended.

Martina Ruiz, 23
[Mention-only] Martina "Tina" Ruiz joined Emily and Elaine's circle in middle school and quickly became one of Emily'' closest friends. While Emily and Elaine debated politics and social change, Tina was more interested in school dances, boy talk, and building a stable future for herself. Now, she's working as a legal secretary while pursuing a paralegal degree, determined to carve out a successful career of her own.

Sophie Smith, 22
[Mention-only] Introduced to the group through Tina in high school, Sophie Smith is equal parts friend, rival, and source of frustration. She spent her high school years dreaming of a life of wealth and comfort — and eventually got exactly that. Though Sophie's friendship with Tina is practically perfect, her friendship with Emily and Elaine has often been strained by jealousy, privilege, and her tendency to wield her family's influence when things don't go her way.
